Tana Toraja, part 3 : Bull Butchering

In death ceremony many families’ member or guests bring something to the ceremony. Usually they bring pig and bull. Close families usually bring bull. Bull symbolizes family status. Rich family will provide many bulls, and if they can provide white bull, their status is increase because white bull can cost hundred millions rupiah. One of the processions in death ceremony is bull butchering. They will butcher bulls and pigs. They share the meats to people who come to the ceremony. If there is meat reminder, they will sell to the market and the money will be used for community necessity such as road improvement.

Tana Toraja, Part 2 : Death Ceremony

Beside the graves in the cliff and the scenery of Tana Toraja, there is something else interesting, death ceremony. Death ceremony in Toraja is bigger than wedding ceremony. It is held at least 4 days. The ceremony is a traditional process to put the death body to the grave in the cliff. Why is it bigger than wedding ceremony? Because the children or family give more respect to their parents, elders or family. They said they saving money for the death ceremony. Before the ceremony held, the family should discuss amongst them to determine the ceremony date. Usually when someone is dead, he/she is not directly buried but mummified first then put the death body in the grave. The family will put the death body to the grave when they have enough money to set up the ceremony because it cost a lot of money.

Tana Toraja, 1st part

Tana Toraja is one region in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is located northern side of South Sulawesi and well known for the scenery, unique culture and ancient traditions. The center of tourism is Rantepao. It takes 8 hours from Makassar to Rantepao by bus. Usually tourists go around 10pm and arrive around 6am in the next morning. Batutumonga, Ke’te Kesu, Londa, Lemo are the places usually tourist visited. In Ke’te Kesu, Londa, Lemo and other places you can see graves, skulls and bones in the cliff and in Batutumonga you can see beautiful scenery of the valley and Rantepau from the mountain. People in Toraja put corps in the cliff. It is one of traditional and unique culture of Toraja. One way to respect to the dead is put cigarettes surround the skulls and bones.

Children of Losari Beach, Makassar

In Losari Beach, there are children (I don’t know if they are homeless or not) with many activities, riding bicycle, swimming in the beach, playing, and some of them are begging for money. Behind their cute and innocence face, they life are hard compare to normal children.

Afternoon and Sunset at Losari Beach, Makassar
